Inverted sugar syrup

Introduction

In recent years, Invertase has received considerable attention in food industry, due to its ability to hydrolyse sucrose into a mixture of glucose and fructose, named Inverted Syrup. Thus, bees spend much less energy while consuming this food when compared to simple sugar syrup. So, it turns out that feeding your bees with simple sugar syrup is less desirable because the sucrose has to be initially broken into glucose and fructose which additionally drains energy from the bees. That is why the most preferable feed for bees is the Inverted sugar syrup.

Methods of production

A lot of methods have been incorporated for the efficient production of the syrup. The conventional method of producing invert syrup is to hydrolyse sucrose in the presence of acid. Inverted sugar syrup can be made without acids or enzymes by heating up granulated sugar and water, however the yield is relatively small.

Bioproduction of inverted syrup with the help of enzymes is a better alternative as compared to conventional methods.

Main benefits using Inverted sugar syrup

The main benefit behind using inverted sugar syrup, instead of just plain sugar solution for stimulative feedings is that the assimilation of sugar (sucrose) requires energy and thus decreases the production output of the beehive. In addition, there is another point to be made – beekeepers usually feed the bees when there is not much food for them. When you use plain sugar syrup you essentially take energy from the bees in order to feed them. By contrast, no energy is taken from the bees when you give them inverted sugar syrup – thus increasing the effect of the feeding with the same quantity of syrup.

Let’s talk about the effect of the special herbal blend in VemoHerb® BEES+ that further stimulates the production performance of the hive and the net profit for the beekeeper.

♦ increased of honey productivity by 39%;
♦ increased activity of the laying queens by 42%;
♦ extended length of life of worker bees by 17%;
♦ increased resilience during winter by 6%;
♦ reduced consumption of honey during winter by 26%;
♦ increased flight activity of colonies by 56%.

For the user’s convenience, VemoHerb® BEES have been further improved, by adding invertase activity to it. We can conclude that you get 2 advantages in 1 product, VemoHerb® BEES+, which combines all the benefits stated above plus invertase activity enough to prepare inverted syrup out of simple sugar, saving the valuable energy of the bees. This makes it possible for every beekeeper to prepare inverted sugar syrup themselves. It can be easily made either at home, or for industrial purposes.

The application of VemoHerb® BEES+ shows significantly more positive effect on the strength, activity, productivity and sustainability of colonies compared to other stimulators present on the market.

Also, by making some simple calculations, you can conclude that the price, which you are going to pay for ready-made inverted sugar syrup is a lot higher, when compared to the combined price of VemoHerb® BEES+ and the plain sugar syrup. Having this in mind, VemoHerb® BEES+ turns out to be not only economically beneficial, but it also provides for numerous health benefits for the hive.

Conclusions

By using plain sugar syrup, you essentially take energy from the bees in order to feed them. In contrast, no additional energy is needed from the bees when you give them inverted sugar syrup – thus increasing the effect of the feeding with the same quantity of syrup.

With the supplement VemoHerb® BEES+ in the inverted sugar syrup, the oviparous activity of queen bees is increased by 38.61%. Bee colonies stimulated with VemoHerb® BEES+ have a higher percentage of hibernated bees and consume less honey on an average bee interhold.

Supplementing bee families with inverted sugar syrup, prepared with VemoHerb® BEES+, leads to increased laying activity of the queen bees and extended length of life of worker bees.

Trakia University – Stara Zagora
Faculty of Agriculture

In recent years, there is a tendency towards decrease of bee colonies. According to data of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (MAF), Agro-statistics Directorate, for the period 2008 – 2009 the bee colonies in the country have been decreased by 27 621, i.e. there is annual decrease with 4.2%.

Significantly larger quantity of bee colonies can be grown in Bulgaria, which can utilize the nectar in the nature and perform better pollination of the plants.

A number of unique herbs exist in the Bulgaria, and plenty of biologically active substances can be derived from them, that stimulate the reproductive functions of livestock. Based on this knowledge, the Bulgarian company VEMO 99 developed the unique herbal premix VemoHerb® BEES – a stimulator for bee families.

The purpose of the study is to determine the influence of VemoHerb® BEES on the honey productivity of bee colonies, laying activity of queen bees and influence on bee resistance during the winter period.

Subject of the studies is the stimulating effect of VemoHerb® BEES on bee colonies in combination with inverted sugar syrup.

The experimental part of the research was carried out in three apiaries, owned by the diesertant, located in the village Brestovitsa, Borovo Municipality, Ruse Region, Bulgaria. The village is located at about 290m altitude. The area has rich honey-bearing vegetation. There are linden and acacia forests near the apiaries, and sown from the agricultural honey crops – rapeseed and sunflower are sown.

During the three years of the test, for each experiment one control and two test groups with 7 bee colonies were formed, lined up by the method of analogues. Bee colonies were settled in beehives system Dadan-Blat.

Bee colonies, participating in the tests were fed by the following scheme:

– Control group No 1– every third day 200 ml inverted sugar syrup was given;
– Experimental group No 2– every third day 200 ml inverted sugar syrup was given with the addition of the herbal premix VemoHerb® BEES in dose of 1 capsule (350 mg) per 2 L syrup;
– Experimental group No 3– fed with 200 ml inverted sugar syrup with the addition of analogous product in dose of 1 g per 2 L syrup.

The following parameters have been monitored: amount of sealed brood, average laying activity of queen bees, honey productivity (kg), quality of hibernated bees (%), honey consumption (kg), honey consumption per interbraid bees (kg).

CONCLUSIONS:

Bee colonies stimulated with VemoHerb® BEES have the best winter resistance compared to the control group and the group fed with similar product.
Bee colonies stimulated with VemoHerb® BEES have the highest percentage of hibernated bees and consume less honey on an average bee interbraid.
The herbal premix VemoHerb® BEES can be applied in dose of 1 capsule (350 mg) per 2 L inverted sugar syrup to stimulate the development of bee colonies during the autumn period and to improve their resilience during the winter.
Taking into consideration the results that show better development of the colonies and the higher honey productivity, as well as the low cost of the used herbal premix VemoHerb® BEES, its effectiveness to increase the productivity of bee colonies and laying activity of the queen bees is proven.
Addition of VemoHerb® BEES to the inverted sugar syrup, leads to increased laying activity of the queen bees by 38.61% more. Towards the end of the period of active development, the laying activity of the queen bees diminishes and becomes almost the same for the three groups.
The measured values for bee number (strength) are significantly higher in the bee families, stimulated with VemoHerb® BEES, in comparison with the control group and the bee families that received the similar product.
The reported data for both studied seasons (2009 and 2010) indicate that the bee colonies of the group, which received inverted sugar syrup with VemoHerb® BEES have the highest honey productivity rate.

Herbal extracts show extraordinary results over the health of bee hives

Why that news is so important?

Not only because of the economical effect but also because of the problems the bees have been experiencing recently. The bees population rapidly decrease. Phenomena such as “Mass death of bees”, Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), honey bee depopulation syndrome (HBDS) have been observed all over the world. Through the years various names of diseases have been given to that phenomenon: disappearing disease, spring dwindle, May disease, autumn collapse, and fall dwindle disease… But what has been happening since the winter of 2006 and is currently going on now is observed for the first time in the human history: Millions of bee hives have died.

World Save Bee Fund (WSBF) warns very seriously that each year the bee colonies in the U.S. decline extremely rapidly. British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) and similar associations in other countries claims the same.

Why are the bees so important?

Because of the pollination. Their role in the pollination is of utmost importance. About 1/3 of the resources that people use depends on it. Bees carry about 90% of that job. The cultivation of agricultural crops, apples, citrus, onions, peppers, zucchini, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, eggplants, melons, coffee, cocoa and more and more depends on the bee pollination.
If the bees disappear, mankind will disappear. That is a fact.

According to beekeepers, bees fly from their hives and never return. Тhe reasons are yet to be confirmed. One is clear: Colony collapse is of huge economically significance because many agricultural crops worldwide are pollinated by bees.

What may be a possible cure comes from the nature!

Reduction of bees worldwide is a fact that it is not negligible. That’s why the discovery of the Bulgarian scientist Ivaylo Hristakov is so interesting and important. He developed his Dissertation for awarding educational and scientific degree “Doctor” on theme of “The effect of specific herbal extracts over the development and productivity of bees” in the Agricultural Faculty at the Trakia University, Bulgaria. Later, he presented his report at the Bulgarian National Association of the professional beekeepers. The presented results were so astonishing, that VEMO 99 decided to develop and improve further the extracts combination into one very effective product – VemoHerb® BEES.

In order to get the actual report, please contact us.

The extracts used in these reports are manufactured by the unique technology of company Vemo 99 Ltd. Based on these trials the company developed and improved furthermore the newest product of the VemoHerb® series – VemoHerb® BEES.
The tests performed on bees show that the stimulative feeding of the bee colonies with inverted sugar syrup with the addition of  VemoHerb® BEES at a dosage of 10mg/kg bees, shows extremely good results on the laying activity of the queen bees as well as on the productivity, activity and stability of the hive as a whole.

The reported higher percentage of bees that survived through the winter in the colonies, nurtured by VemoHerb® BEES, is an indicator of normal development and sustainability in their worst (winter) period of life.  And the increased activity of laying queens tends to strengthen the bee hives.

The study shows that stimulative feeding of bee families with VemoHerb® BEES leads to the development of strong families that utilize in the best possible way the available pollen.

The application of VemoHerb® BEES shows significantly more positive effect on the strength, activity, productivity and sustainability of colonies compared to other stimulators present on the market.

Taking in consideration on one hand the better development of colonies (greater amount of raised brood and available bees) and higher honey productivity, and on the other hand the low cost of VemoHerb® BEES, proves the efficiency of its use to increase the productivity of bee hives and to stimulate the laying activity of queen bees. It is also essential to note the natural origin of the product, which main ingredients are biologically active plant extracts, thus differentiating it from alternative synthetic drugs on the market.

VemoHerb® BEES is an innovative product based on homogeneous mixture of plant extracts. The General physiological action of the product is determined by the high content of biologically active substances: furostanol saponins, flavonoids (apigenin, rutin, kepferol), aromatic ketones, coumarins and polyphenols.

The beekeepers and the whole world population should start caring more for the bees and their health. Otherwise we may face a fatal reduction of many species of plants and animals that will have catastrophic results for the habitants of planet Earth.

VemoHerb Bees – the natural beehive stimulator

Let’s see how the beehives can be healthier and stronger produce and more honey – completely naturally.

An independent study has recently concluded that unique combination of dry plant extracts produced by Bulgarian manufacturer VEMO 99 have extraordinary results over productivity and general health of the bee hives.

Why that news is so important?

Reduction of bees worldwide is a fact that is not negligible. The beehives are becoming weaker and weaker and bees are disappearing. That’s why the discovery of the Bulgarian scientist Ivaylo Hristakov is so interesting and important. He developed his Dissertation “The effect of specific herbal extracts over the development and productivity of bees” at the Trakia University, Bulgaria. Later, he presented his report at the National Association of the professional beekeepers.

The extracts used in these reports are manufactured by the unique technology of company Vemo 99 Ltd. Based on these trials VemoHerb® BEES was born.

Tests performed on bees with VemoHerb® BEES show:
►Increase of honey productivity by 39%
►Increase of the activity of laying queens by 42%
►Extended length of life of worker bees by 17%
►Increase of the resilience during winter by 6%
►Reduction of the honey consumption during winter by 26%
►Increase of the flight activity of colonies by 56%

We see some really amazing results! How is the research done?

The experimental part of the research is done on three apiaries located in the village of Brestovitza, province of Ruse. The village is located at 290m altitude. The area is rich of honeycomb vegetation. There are forests nearby the apiaries and the area is rich in rapeseed and sunflower. The climate is suitable for аpiculture.

In the experiments, inverted sugar syrup with the addition of VemoHerb® BEES was used for the stimulative feeding of one of the experimental groups. VemoHerb® BEES is an innovative non-hormonal product based on herbs.

The research was conducted for 3 years. One control and two test groups with 7 bee families each were formed. The bee families were raised in Dadant-Blatt beehives.

The bee families were fed according to the following scheme:

1) Group No1 (control) – with 200 ml inverted sugar syrup in each three days;
2) Group No2 (test) – with 200 ml inverted sugar syrup in each three days with added herbal premix VemoHerb® BEES in dosage 1 capsule for each 2 litres syrup.
3) Group No3 (test) – 200 ml inverted sugar syrup with added “Startovit”, 1g per 2 liters syrup. (“Startovit” is a widely used veterinary product in Bulgaria that contains: NaCl, CoCl2, Na2PO4 and others.)

Thus, beside testing the herbal supplement VemoHerb® BEES, an additional aim of the research was to compare it with the other popular veterinary product. The results from the experiments proved that VemoHerb® BEES performed even better than the other product, which is well-known to be effective.

The effect of the application of VemoHerb® BEES is so obvious that it becomes visible in a short time. Its application for the spring and autumn feeding of bee families shows very good results:

VemoHerb® BEES increases significantly the honey productivity and the laying activity of the queen.
►Life expectancy of worker bees during the active period is increased significantly;
►The flying activity of worker bees is increased which leads to better utilization of the available feed;
►Bee families stimulated with VemoHerb® BEES are stronger during the winter, the mortality is less, consume less honey and there are more bees that bloom more intensively in spring time;

One pack is enough for 1 stimulative feeding (7 weeks application) of 45 beehives.

Due to the excellent results and the low cost of VemoHerb® BEES, it makes economic sense to use it for increasing bee productivity. In addition, as already mentioned the product is harmless for both bees and people, which makes it very suitable for raising bees.

Another variety of VemoHerb® BEES is VemoHerb® BEES+

►With VemoHerb® BEES+ you can benefit the same effects as with VemoHerb® BEES
►Plus you can use it to prepare inverted sugar syrup, used for simulative feeding.

By using VemoHerb® BEES+, everybody can make their own inverted sugar syrup either at home or at a production facility. No need to buy inverted sugar syrup!

With just 1.5 g VemoHerb® BEES+ you can produce 10 litres 65% inverted sugar syrup. For that purpose, you are going to need 1.5g VemoHerb® BEES+, 6.5 kg sugar and tap water. The cost of those materials is the following: 2.5EUR for 1.5g VemoHerb® BEES+, 5.2EUR for 6.5kg sugar, 7.70EUR in total. This price is calculated for small quantities. If you order larger quantities and get a discount, the price would be at least 20-30% lower. If you buy 10 litres inverted sugar syrup, the price would be about 0.95EUR per litre, so 9.5EUR for 10 litres. Therefore, you are going to save 1.8EUR by preparing your own syrup with VemoHerb® BEES+.

By using VemoHerb® BEES+ as a feed additive, for every package of 30g you are going to save money as you do not need to buy sugar syrup AND the amazing effect that comes from the extracts contained in the product would be absolutely free.

Therefore, not only is the product free, but we also obtain economic benefit by not buying a ready-made sugar syrup.

Apply 200-250 ml of the syrup mixture to each beehive every 3 days for 6-7 weeks. Stimulative feedings are performed in the Spring (March-April) when pollen and nectar levels are low. Additional applications in August-September are also beneficial. Apply only in temperatures above 12°C (54°F).

What are the active substances in VemoHerb® BEES?

The product contains biologically active components such as saponins, sterols, flavonoids, tannins, polyphenols and others. They are all extracted from popular medicinal plants in our region. Those are biologically active substances with broad spectrum that enhance the reproductive functions of male and female animals.

Is there any advantage to use herbal products?

There was a period during which the achievements of the synthetic chemistry were so exaggerated that herbal-based treatment was ignored. Veterinary doctors used synthetic hormones for treatment and stimulation of reproduction in animals. When people ate food of animal origin they took also small quantities of hormones, which lead to certain illnesses and hormonal imbalances. That resulted in a ban of many of the synthetic hormones for veterinary use, which gave us the opportunity to renew our interest in natural medicinal sources and, above all, in herbs and to replace the dangerous hormones with harmless herbal products.

The medicinal substances found in plants are products of plant metabolism and for this reason they are included in animal’s metabolic processes more naturally than the synthetic pharmaceuticals. Herbal-based products are associated with fewer side effects and risks during the treatment. And what is more important is that VemoHerb® BEES is actually more effective than synthetic products.
